Chief Judge of the Tax Court of Canada Appointed

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Alban Garon as Chief Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces the late Chief Judge Donald H. Christie who passed away May 3, 1999. Chief Judge Garon has served as Associate Chief Judge since February 11, 1999.
Chief Judge Garon received his LL.L. from Laval University in 1954 and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1955. Chief Judge Garon later received a Diploma of Superior Studies in Law from the University of Ottawa in 1958 and, in 1980, obtained an LL.B. (Common Law) from that university.
Prior to his appointment to the Tax Court of Canada in 1988, Chief Judge Garon practiced taxation law with the Department of Justice in Ottawa; from 1982-86, he was Associate Deputy Minister responsible for tax litigation and the Civil Law Section. For some 27 years, Chief Judge Garon was a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law (Civil Law Section) at the University of Ottawa specializing in the fields of administrative, civil and tax law. Chief Judge Garon was appointed Associate Chief Judge on February 11, 1999.
This appointment is effective immediately.
