 Summit of the Americas 2001

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

June 29, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today welcomed the election of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to a second five-year term of office:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate Secretary-General Annan on his re-election. This is great news for Canada and for the entire international community. Kofi Annan has demonstrated outstanding leadership over the past five years in guiding the work of the United Nations as it enters the twenty-first century. Indeed in just the past week, I was moved by his deeply personal and impassioned engagement in achieving the historic blueprint that will guide the UN in leading the global fight against the scourge of HIV/AIDS.

Canada has worked closely with the Secretary-General, particularly during our tenure as a member of the Security Council, and we welcome the opportunity to continue working with him on our shared goal of a renewed, reformed and dynamic United Nations."
