CBSA seizes loaded handgun, ammo, knife, high capacity magazines at Lansdowne port of entry

Lansdowne, Ontario, May 16, 2013 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that officers at the Lansdowne port of entry have seized a number of prohibited weapons from a traveller.

On May 12, 2013, Ryan Rubinstein of Coupville, Washington sought entry to Canada at the Lansdowne port of entry. After CBSA officers asked him if he was in possession of any firearms or weapons, he stated that he was not and was referred for a secondary examination to determine his admissibility to Canada.

Prior to the examination of his vehicle, CBSA officers asked Rubinstein if he had any weapons on his person for their own safety. Rubinstein produced a butterfly knife from his front right pants pocket, which is prohibited in Canada.

During the search of his vehicle, officers found a loaded 9 mm pistol with a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition, two additional cartridge magazines belonging to the pistol each containing 15 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, and 13 M-4 cartridge magazines, each with a 30-round capacity.

Rubinstein, 26, is charged with three counts of failing to report imported goods, one count of making false statements and three counts of smuggling under the Customs Act. He is also charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of a prohibited device under the Criminal Code.

Rubinstein has a court appearance on Friday, May 17.

The CBSA reminds all travellers to truthfully declare all purchases, including firearms, when entering Canada. For more information, please refer to the I Declare brochure on the CBSA Web site.
