Winnipeg, Manitoba, February 7, 2013 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that Gregory Joseph Lague was sentenced yesterday to one year incarceration and forfeiture of seized evidence following a guilty plea to Possession of Unlawfully Imported Goods, contrary to the Customs Act, in Winnipeg Provincial Court on October 10, 2012.
On September 24, 2009 at the port of Emerson, Lague was referred for examination and CBSA officers conducted a routine search of the vehicle and found a laptop computer containing images of child pornography. The officers seized the laptop and the CBSA Criminal Investigations Division launched an investigation against Lague which led to the charges.
Lague, a foreign national, has been in custody since October 10, 2012 pending his sentencing.
"I commend the outstanding work of our CBSA officers and investigators whose efforts led to this conviction," said Lauren D. Delgaty, Regional Director General, CBSA Prairie Region. "This case demonstrates the CBSA's commitment to ensuring our laws are upheld and preventing the exploitation of children in Canada and around the world."
The Customs Act prohibits the importation of certain goods, including child pornography as defined by the Criminal Code. The CBSA works closely with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada to prosecute to the full extent of the law those engaged in smuggling prohibited material into Canada.
