CBSA officers in Calgary seize 65 grams of heroin

Calgary, Alberta, March 6, 2013 The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers in Calgary, Alberta seized approximately 65 grams of heroin in a courier shipment, destined for Saskatoon.

On Wednesday, February 27, CBSA officers from the Calgary Commercial Operations examined a shipment of crafts from Uganda. CBSA officers noted anomalies with some of the items contained inside the parcel. A closer and more detailed examination revealed the drugs concealed inside the centre of a wooden statue. The investigation is ongoing.

While this is the most significant drug seizure in Calgary so far this year, it's not the first. In fact, CBSA officers have made 55 drug seizures since January 1, including:

  • 45 kilograms of khat;
  • 70 grams of opium;
  • 1,400 doses of steroids; and
  • 10 litres of safrole, a precursor chemical used in the production of MDMA (ecstasy).

These seizures are a direct result of the diligent work of CBSA officers who use their examination and investigative skills, as well as overall training, to identify indicators of concealment.

The CBSA works to prevent drugs and other contraband from entering Canada. If you have witnessed or are aware of an incident involving suspicious cross-border activity, please contact the CBSA Border Watch Toll-free Line at 1-888-502-9060.
