Lloydminster man convicted in firearm smuggling case

Edmonton, Alberta, April 4, 2013—The Canada Border Services Agency announced today that Todd Dean Mansfield was sentenced in Lloydminster Provincial Court to a $7,000 fine and a two-year weapons and explosives prohibition for one Customs Act charge.

A CBSA criminal investigation revealed that Mansfield purchased prohibited firearm parts and weapons in the United States and attempted to have them shipped to his home address in Canada. CBSA officers intercepted Mansfield’s parcel at the Vancouver International Mail Centre on August 16, 2012 and located the following prohibited weapons:

  • 1 canister of pepper spray
  • 1 stun gun
  • 8 – 30-round over capacity rifle magazines
  • 1 – 20-round over capacity rifle magazine
  • 2 – 15-round pistol magazines
  • 2 – 33-round pistol magazines

The CBSA works closely with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada to prosecute to the full extent of the law those engaged in smuggling prohibited material into Canada. This case demonstrates that the work of the CBSA is vital in detecting contraband and preventing dangerous weapons from reaching our communities.
