Texas man convicted in firearm smuggling case at the border

Estevan, Saskatchewan, May 2, 2013—The Canada Border Services Agency announced today that Jeremy Wayne James was convicted in a gun smuggling incident at the North Portal, Saskatchewan border crossing. On April 29, 2013, the Regina Provincial Court sentenced James to time served and a fine of $2,000 for one offence of non-report under the Customs Act.

On April 26, 2013, James arrived at the border and declared two BB guns and a bow, in addition to his personal belongings. CBSA officers referred James’ truck for further examination. Through the use of X-ray equipment, CBSA officers detected anomalies among James’ belongings. Following a more in-depth search, officers were able to locate a .22 calibre handgun, a .44 calibre replica handgun, and 7 over capacity (30 round) assault rifle magazines. All of these items were located in separate containers in the back of the truck, packed within household goods.

James was arrested for smuggling under the Customs Act.

The CBSA reminds all travellers that they are required to answer all questions truthfully and declare all goods they are bringing into Canada, including firearms and weapons in their possession. Failure to declare goods, including firearms, and other Customs Act contraventions may lead to prosecution in a court of law.
