CBSA and Peel Regional Police seize suspected heroin at Toronto Pearson International Airport

Mississauga, Ontario, July 11, 2013 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Peel Regional Police (PRP) announced today a significant seizure of suspected heroin at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

On July 2, 2013, during a routine inspection at a warehouse, CBSA officers were examining shipments off a flight from Pakistan and discovered a suspicious box. Upon examination, officers found inside the box a sports bag filled with four plastic wrapped packages sealed with brown packing tape. Officers opened the packages and found a substance that proved positive for suspected heroin during subsequent field testing.

The packages filled with suspected heroin weighed over 10 kg and were turned over to the PRP for further investigation. The investigation is still ongoing.

“This is yet another significant narcotic seizure by the CBSA in recent weeks,” said Goran Vragovic, Regional Director General of the Greater Toronto Area Region. “I want to warn would-be smugglers that CBSA officers will not tolerate the use of our international airports for illegal cross border activities.”

“The illegal importation and distribution of narcotics is a serious criminal offence with far-reaching consequences,” said Superintendent Brian Adams of the PRP. “Peel Regional Police is dedicated to working closely with the CBSA to combat smuggling and the associated criminal activities it brings to our communities. Cooperation with our law enforcement partners makes seizures like this possible and keeps our communities safe.”
