CBSA statement regarding a PSIC report on wrongdoing

Ottawa, Ontario, March 7, 2013 —Following the tabling of a Public Sector Integrity Commissioner (PSIC) report on wrongdoing by an employee at the Pigeon River port of entry, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) President, Luc Portelance, made the following statement:

“The Public Service Integrity Commissioner tabled a report in Parliament today that contains findings of wrongdoing against a CBSA employee. The CBSA agrees with the findings, and accepts the recommendations contained in the report.

The CBSA takes these matters very seriously; this individual’s employment with the CBSA has since been terminated. In addition, we have taken steps to reinforce with our employees the importance of being aware of their obligations under the recently revised CBSA Code of Conduct, which clearly outlines employees’ responsibilities both on and off duty.

Our work is complex and we operate in an ever evolving environment where security risks are very real. We are continuously bolstering our defence against challenges that could compromise the integrity of our work. Ongoing reviews and improvements to our training programs, screening standards and employee awareness help to further strengthen our Agency’s security.

We recognize that it takes courage to come forward and report wrongdoing in the workplace. The CBSA commends those individuals that do so.”
