Between the Conquest and the end of the War of 1812-1814, what would become Canada experienced events and developments basic to our present-day understanding of our country.
We were invaded by the Americans. Explorers and traders crossed the Prairies, penetrated the Rockies, probed the shores of the Pacific Ocean and pierced the Arctic vastness. Our official cultural duality French and English was established. The First Peoples struggled to keep their distinctiveness.
It was a period of immigration and settlement, rebellions and nation-building as the British North American colonies strained towards union Confederation and an independent identity.
