DECORATIONS

Decorations recognize various degrees of bravery, professionalism, and exceptional devotion to duty. They are divided into three categories : Military Valour, Bravery and Meritorious Service.

Military Valour Decorations

The Victoria Cross is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery, a daring or preeminent act of valour or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty, in the presence of the enemy. It has precedence over all other Canadian orders, decorations or medals.

The Star of Military Valour is awarded for distinguished and valiant service in the presence of the enemy.

The Medal of Military Valour is awarded for an act of valour or devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.

All are awarded by the Governor General on the advice of the Military Valour Advisory Committee. The Decorations for Military Valour have been available since January 1, 1993 to members of the Canadian Forces or members of an allied armed force that are serving with or in conjunction with the Canadian Forces. They may be awarded posthumously.
