How much does Residence cost?
The cost varies depending on the type of room and the meal plan
selected. A current fee
schedule is available at this web site or through the
Residence Office.
How do I pay?
The payment schedule is $1000 by the end of June, balance
of first term fees by mid September, and all of second
term fees by mid January. Please see your current Residence
Handbook for the exact payment dates. A late fee will be charged
for late payments.
Can I pay by credit card?
Credit card payments for room and board are accepted from International
students only. All other students may pay using debit cards, cash,
or cheques.
I have a scholarship/bursary/student
loan. Can I pay when my funds arrive?
Yes. You must apply for a deferral through the AVM Residence Office
with documentation. Fees must be paid as soon as the funds are
processed.
Is
a Meal Membership included?
Yes, for Mary Speechly Hall, Taché Hall, and University College
Residence. It is optional for Arthur V. Mauro residents.
Do I have to take a Meal Membership?
Yes. For safety reasons residents are not permitted to cook in
their rooms. Students living in Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence
are allowed to cook in their kitchenettes or may choose a Meal
Membership.
How does the Meal Membership work?
Speechly/Taché residents eat their meals in their own dining room
in Pembina Hall. There are different levels of meal memberships
available and include Declining Balance Dollars.
How do Declining Balance Dollars
work?
The declining balance meal membership provides residents with
the flexibility of eating at any University Food Services outlet
on campus (including the Pembina Hall Dining Room).
How
do I apply for residence?
The application is available on our web site for you to print,
complete, and mail or bring to the AVM Residence Office. You can
also call or write us and we will mail one to you. Don't forget
to include your non-refundable Application Fee.
When should I apply?
Residence is in high demand so you should apply early - perhaps
even before you receive your acceptance to the University. The
earlier you apply, the better your chance of getting a room.
Do I have to send a deposit?
No, however, there is an Application Fee listed on the Application
Form which covers the cost of processing the application and is
non-refundable.
Are the Residence halls supervised?
Residence Life staff live on-site to attend to emergencies and
enforce Community Standards.
Is
there a curfew?
No, but all residents are expected to observe Community Standards
to ensure that others are permitted reasonable peace and quiet,
and respect established Quiet Hours.
Can I have alcohol in the Residence?
Alcohol is permitted in accordance with the Provincial Liquor
Law and the University's Campus Alcohol Policy. Students who drink
must do so in a safe and responsible manner.
Can I smoke in the Residence?
The University of Manitoba is a clean air campus. Residents cannot
smoke anywhere inside the residence buildings or in any other
building on campus.
Can I have guests overnight?
As rooms are contracted to residents for their private use only,
it is expected that guests will not stay more than three nights
per term. In double rooms, guests are only permitted with the
consent of the roommate.
Do the rooms have private washrooms?
Not in the dorm residences. However, the Arthur V. Mauro Student
Residence does have a private washroom in each suite, complete
with shower, which both roommates would share.
Are the rooms furnished?
Yes. Each room has a bed, desk and chair, lamp, recylce bin, wastebasket,
and book shelves. The Arthur V. Mauro Residence also has a television
and phone in each bedroom.
How big are the rooms?
Room sizes vary considerably. The standard room is about 15 square
metres or 120 square feet.
Do I need to bring my own bed linen?
Yes.
Can I bring my own electrical appliances?
CSA approved appliances are permitted, other than cooking appliances
and those that generate significant heat. For example, hair dryers,
coffee makers, and microwaves are permitted; toaster ovens and
hot plates are not.
Can
I get high-speed Internet?
All residence rooms offer high-speed Internet access. DSL modems
will be made available to residents who do not have a built-in
modem in their room.
How about televisions?
Televisions are located in each lounge. Students can bring
their own televisions for hook-up in their own rooms. There is
a television in each bedroom in the Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence.
Is parking included?
No, arrangements are made directly with Parking and Shuttle Services'
website at umanitoba.ca/parking.
The parking lots closest to the residences are reserved for resident
students.
How are rooms assigned?
Returning students are assigned their rooms first. New students
are assigned in order of date of application.
Are
the Residences co-ed?
Yes.
What can I do if I don't like my room/roommate?
After allowing a reasonable period for adjustment (about six weeks)
your Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) will review requests for
room or roommate changes.
What are the periods of Residence occupancy?
Residence occupancy corresponds to the regular academic year,
beginning in September and ending in April. Summer leases are
also available from early May until mid-August.
What are the Move -in/Move-out dates?
First-year students: Saturday of Labour Day Weekend
Mary Speechly Hall, Taché Hall, & University College
Returning students: Sunday of Labour Day Weekend

All students: Monday of Labour Day Weekend
Arthur V. Mauro Residence
All move-ins begin at 9:00 a.m. each day. You will receive a
key to your room on move-in day. Room numbers cannot be provided
until that time.
Students are expected to move out within 24 hours of their
last exam.
Can I stay in Residence during the University's
holiday shut-down period (end of December to beginning of January)?
The University is closed during this period and all food service
is shut down. However, in special circumstances residents may
make arrangements to stay for the holidays. A few may be charged.
