Nurse Practitioner

  1. Introduction

    Welcome to the College of Nurses’ guide to registration for Nurse Practitioners.

  2. Practising as an NP in Ontario

    Only members of the College's Extended Class are permitted to call themselves “Nurse Practitioners” and practise as NPs within the province of Ontario.

  3. Beginning the Application Process

    The application process for NPs begins when an applicant contacts the College and requests the Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certificate Application Package.

  4. Registration Requirements

    During the application process, the College assesses all NP applicants to determine whether they meet the following registration requirements.

  5. Examinations

    All applicants to the Extended Class must take the NP registration examination approved by Council for the requested NP specialty certificate.

  6. Initial Registration

    When you have met all registration requirements, including the successful completion of your registration and jurisprudence exams, the College will send you the Initial Registration form for the Extended Class.

  7. Requesting Accommodation

    Everyone who writes an examination as part of their application to the College has the right to request accommodation.

  8. Collection of Personal Information

    Information about how the College collects and safeguards personal information provided for the purpose of registration or reinstatement.
