James Hamilton Ross

(May 12, 1856 - December 14, 1932)

The Honourable James Hamilton Ross was an ardent defender of territorial rights and campaigned continuously for responsible government. He was an active participant in the negotiations that led to the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Ross sat in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1883 to 1901. He was a member of the executive council from 1895 to 1897 and was treasurer and Commissioner of Public Works from 1897 to 1901.

He was elected to the House of Commons in 1902, representing the Yukon, and was appointed to the Senate in 1904.
