Building Naming in Commemoration of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan
May 2014
The La Promenade Building, located in the Parliamentary Precinct, has been chosen to be renamed “The Valour Building” to commemorate the heroic contributions and ultimate sacrifices made by military heroes and Canadian civilians during the 12-year military mission in Afghanistan.
This Government of Canada building, which is under the custody of Public Works and Government Services Canada, is located at 151 Sparks Street in Ottawa.
The 12-storey building, constructed in 1972 and rehabilitated in 2010, is providing offices for members of Parliament and committee rooms for the House of Commons during the rehabilitation of the West Block. The La Promenade Building had already been named by the previous owner when it was acquired by the Government of Canada in the 1970s.
Given the importance of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, there was a desire to recognize the valour, service and sacrifice of the members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Public Service of Canada who contributed while serving in Afghanistan itself, as well as from Canada and other locations around the world.
The renaming of this building is one of the Government of Canada’s initiatives to recognize and commemorate Canada’s contributions to the international commitment to support Afghanistan.
The building’s new name was announced on May 8, 2014, on the eve of the National Day of Honour, to pay tribute to those who participated in the Canadian effort in Afghanistan.
