The organization

Statistics Canada is all about measuring and communicating who we are as a country. The agency's mandate is to collect, analyze and disseminate statistical information on many aspects of life in Canada.

Statistics Canada has, over the years, gained international recognition as one of the leading statistical agencies in the world. This is largely due to its innovative statistical achievements and the dynamism of its 5,400 employees.

Each day, thousands of individuals consult Statistics Canada data for reliable information about Canada.

Governments, businesses, associations, educational institutions and a host of other users rely on the data when making decisions essential to the development and future of the country.

Statistics Canada collects its data by conducting censuses and sample surveys and by using administrative records. In addition to the censuses of population and agriculture, Statistics Canada conducts hundreds of surveys every year. The broad range of subjects covered includes family income and expenditure, health, education, employment and unemployment, consumer prices, retail sales, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture and trade.
