Membership Executive Newsletter Resources About our Club:The Ottawa Lapsmith Club was founded as a small interest group in 1966. Since then it has grown so that today there are approximately 150 members. The club incorporated in 1997 and amalgamated with the Ottawa Valley Mineral Association to form the Ottawa Lapsmith & Mineral Club, thus expanding its field of interest to minerology as well as the many facets of lapidary work. Our club also organises an Annual Gem & Mineral Show in September each year, and it is always a big hit with local residents and rockhounds alike. Workshops:Our club maintains a well equipped 1500 sq. ft. workshop in which courses are run and in which club members can work independently during supervised times during the week. The workshop is located at 215 Bell Street North in Ottawa.The club owns a variety of lapidary and metal smithing equipment, which is available to members on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. For a $2.00 fee per session, or a fee per cut on the slabbing machines, a member has access to two 18 inch slabbing saws, one 10 inch slabbing saw, up to five trimming saws from 4 inches to 10 inches, grinding and polishing tools from 100 grit and above, two facetting machines, one rolling mill, and sets of metal smithing tools. In order to help train our members, the club provides a series of courses on cabbing, wire wrapping, beading, and metal smithing. These courses are organized according to member demand. Special activities are also a part of our annual program. These include demonstrations, open house events, and other special activities. Collectively, our members have a wealth of talent and knowledge which they are always willing to share with beginners and advanced users alike. Field Trips:In the Ottawa area there are many rock collecting sites of interest, and these provide great destinations for our field trips. Interested members also organize and participate on longer trips to regions such as the North Shore of Lake Superior and the Maritimes.Annual Gem & Mineral Show:Held in late September, the annual show is the highlight of our year. The Nepean Sportsplex curling rink on Woodroffe Ave. is filled to capacity with dealers, customers and onlookers. Where else can one shop for some of the best gemstones and minerals in the world offered at very reasonable prices. Membership:Membership is open to all interested persons upon the payment. Annual membership fees are: $15.00 / individual, and $ 20.00 / family. This does not cover individual field trip expenses. The membership year runs from the 1st of January to the 31st of December. Membership fees are due at the end of the year. New members are welcome anytime.
