Submitting Articles for Publication Articles and other content submitted to the Canadian Rockhound are published free of charge. If you wish to submit an article, please read the sections below. Guidelines for Authors1. Acceptable ContentArticles should relate to minerals, fossils, gemstones, lapidary, faceting, general techniques, field trip adventures, geology, or the earth sciences in general. Book reviews are welcome too. Articles printed in club newsletters are acceptable, but please ensure you obtain permission from your club to reprint the article in the Canadian Rockhound.Articles should be written with the general audience in mind. Please do not submit scientific papers, since the Canadian Rockhound is not a refereed scientific journal. While this magazine focuses on Canadian content, articles from any country are welcome. You may also submit articles written in French, German, Spanish or Italian. Please ensure your articles read well and that they are relatively free of spelling and grammatical errors. 2. Article LengthSuggested article length is between 300 and 1000 words. Longer articles may be submitted, if they are part of an in-depth feature. Please contact the editor of the Canadian Rockhound if you wish to submit a longer article.3. Specify AuthorsInclude the name(s) of all authors. If the article was printed in a club newsletter, please indicate the author(s) and the name and issue of the newsletter in which the article was first published.4. Accuracy / SpellingPlease check your articles for obvious errors in spelling and grammar. Also ensure your factual information is accurate.5. IllustrationsPhotographs, maps and diagrams are welcome. Please limit photos to a maximum of 6, if possible. If the illustrations are too large, they will either be reduced in size or placed on a separate page.5.1 Scanning Tips Please scan your photographs at high resolution (600 dpi), in 16 million colours. It is highly recommended you trim your scanned photos down to about 400 pixels wide, so that they will fit on the article page. 5.2 File Formats for Images Save your scanned photos in the standard JPEG (*.jpg) format. JPEG is intended for photos. Do not save your photos in GIF format, as this will dramatically reduce the quality of the image and reduce the number of colours from 16 million down to just 256. Nothing is worse than staring at a dull grainy picture! GIF (*.gif) format should be used for drawings and diagrams. Macintosh users should save their graphics in a PC-compatible JPEG format. Don't save any thumbnail image in Adobe Photoshop. If this is done, the JPEG images will be unreadable. 6. CopyrightAuthors retain copyright of their articles. Please indicate whether or not you grant permission for your article to be freely re-printed in another publication (with any necessary conditions). A copyright statement will appear at the end of your article, along with a © copyright symbol.7. Editing NotesThe editor retains the right to edit the article where necessary. An exception may be a reprint of a previously published article.Acceptable Word Processing FormatsPlease send your articles in any one of the followingword processing formats:
