"Hear me," the old shaman rumbled. "It must be the true murderer. The one whose very hand took Kelp’s life. No other. And we will know if you brought us the killer. Our spirits will examine the one you name."

The giant stepped in closer. "You will bring that Person to us. You will come before the first starvation moon."

The shaman continued, "Succeed and no harm comes. Fail and I will send spirits you cannot quench. Your babies? Born blind, born sick. Your women? They will bleed from moon to moon. Your men? No heart. Why live if the glory departs?"
- From Hyaenas

A mystery set in 35,000 B.C.? Why not? A murder has been committed, and Gar, a shaman of his clan, the Real People, sets off to find the killer. The powerful shaman of the Elk clan has dictated that Gar must deliver the murderer to them. His fear of the curses leveled against his clan should he fail, isn’t the only reason Gar is determined to solve the mystery and deliver the murderer. The dead man’s wife and her strange, ugly child have found a place in his heart. Gar struggles against Head and Heart as he fights to save his clan and the woman he loves.

Gar communes with the fickle spirits that usually lead him, but this time they are silent. As he searches for clues and tries to understand the ones he already has, he senses the presence of someone else. A woman is following him – watching his every move. Who is this woman? Could she have killed Kelp? Or could it be someone much closer to him?

This delightful novel introduces a pre-historic detective who struggles to learn more about himself as he tries to uncover the truth about the secrets that surround him. Gar is an engaging and honest character who, despite the ancient setting, will become someone a reader can connect with.

Dengler has crafted a masterpiece. HYAENAS proves that there are still new slants to the mystery genre. Well written and intriguing. I hope to see Gar and the Real People again soon.
