Community college professor Bel Barrett is back and so are her menopausal mood swings. She’s fed up with the mid-life blues – what with her daughter’s email announcement of pregnancy and upcoming nuptials, and her son’s return to the nest - enough to develop a lingering relationship with the television. When she opts for a late night stroll with live in lover Sol to calm her nerves, instead of finding a moment of romance, she finds a corpse.

As is becoming usual, before Bel can ask what’s next, she’s brought into the world of obsessive Sinatra worship among students. The corpse wasn’t Frank Sinatra of course, but a cheap imitator who also happened to be two-timing one of Bel’s best students. Unfortunately, the poor girl is now the prime suspect in this murder. Bel has no choice but to dive in and hope she can figure out the mess before she becomes the next victim.

Isenberg has carved out a unique niche in the publishing industry. The character of Bel is realistic, slightly exaggerated and often laugh-out-loud funny. The situations in which she finds herself are usually ludicrous but highly engaging.

Mood Swings to Murder is the third Bel Barrett mystery and probably the best yet. It’s different enough from the others to be fresh yet similar enough to be familiar. This is one heroine I hope never really grows old.
