To Kill a King is the third in the Caroline Rhodes Mystery Series by Mary Welk. Caroline is an ER nurse who seems to find dead bodies in the same way that Jessica Fletcher did in the television series Murder, She Wrote - made me wonder why anyone ever stayed in deadly Cabot Cove.

Caroline has endured hospitalization for depression after losing her husband and having a bad case of karma to boot. She’s moved to Rhineburg, Illinois, a university town, to start her life anew. Until she’s summoned by an old friend, Molly O’Neal, who begs her to return to Niles to help out in the troubled ER. Molly’s having problems with a doctor named Roger MacGuffy who has a penchant for sleeping with the nurses, and she’s on the verge of being fired by one of MacGuffy’s purported conquests, Angela Horowitz - a woman who happens to be her boss.

When Angela ends up dead, Molly’s the prime suspect, and Caroline Rhodes has to do some fast dancing - and on a gimpy left ankle - in order to tear suspicion away from Molly. So she enlists family and friends in her quest to find the murderer.

Welk’s style is quite workmanlike and Caroline Rhodes is a likeable character, although she gets herself into so many questionable situations that I found myself wanting to shout at her, "No, don’t leave the house today! Stay home!" The mystery itself is one of tangled relationships and old secrets, so it was impossible for me to figure out whodunit before the conclusion.

I’ve no doubt that Mary Welk’s books would appeal to fans of medical mysteries featuring amateur sleuths, such as those by Eileen Dreyer. Just know that, once you read them, you’ll think twice about ever setting foot in an ER again.
