The National Immunization Strategy (NIS) was launched in 2003 as a comprehensive strategy designed to meet new challenges in immunization and the current and future immunization needs of all Canadians.
The NIS has since enabled increased collaboration between Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments and key stakeholders that work in partnership to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of immunization programs across Canada.
The Canadian Immunization Committee (CIC) is an issue group under the Communicable Disease Control Expert Group (CDCEG) of the Pan-Canadian Public Health Network. The CIC is a Federal/Provincial/Territorial (F/P/T) committee that was established in 2004 to act as a mechanism for national, provincial, and territorial collaboration to advance the implementation of the NIS and address issues impacting immunization in Canada.
The Strategy has nine goals that target immunization challenges specific to Canada. The NIS also has 5 specific strategic components and 4 supporting activities:
