On Wednesday, October 14, 2009 the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Federal Minister of Health and Dr. David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer for Canada will be in Winnipeg, Manitoba for the following activities:

10:00 a.m. (Central Time): A tour of areas in the National Microbiology Laboratory that focus on work relating to the H1N1 flu virus. They will be joined by Dr. Frank Plummer, Chief Science Advisor for the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Media are invited to accompany the tour but must arrive 15 minutes in advance in order to clear security. Valid photo identification is required.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is hosting a meeting to bring together national and international intensive care (ICU) specialists, public health officials, infection control practitioners, and other medical health experts to discuss the clinical care and management of severe H1N1 disease and to prepare for the anticipated fall pandemic wave.

Please arrive 30 minutes early to sign-in. Please report to the media registration desk on the first floor upon arrival.

Over the weekend, individual Provinces and Territories may release case numbers, however there will be no formal case number reporting to the Public Health Agency of Canada. The Provincial and Territorial numbers will be reflected in the national case number update on Wednesday, May 20.

The evidence gathered so far indicates the H1N1 flu virus causes only mild illness in most cases and spreads much like seasonal influenza.
