Preliminary Results

Six months prospective surveillance (November 1, 2004 to April 30, 2005) in 34 hospitals. Under surveillance were all hospitalized patients at least 1 year of age. The total mean incidence of nosocomial CDAD was 6.0/1000 admissions, and the mean case fatality ratio was 5.7%.
Severe outcomes of patients with CDAD were as follows:

  • Colectomy
    • 18 (1.0%) patients
  • ICU admission for CDAD
    • 37 (2.1%) patients
  • Died: 271 (14.6%) patients
    • Directly related to CDAD: 40 (2.2%)
    • Indirectly related to CDAD: 63 (3.5%)
    • Unrelated to CDAD: 168 (9.1%)
