National Studies on Acute Gastrointestinal Illness (NSAGI)

A Health Canada Program to Study Acute Gastrointestinal Illnesses across Canada

The Foodborne, Waterborne and Zoonotic Infections Division have been developing National Studies on Acute Gastrointestinal Illness (NSAGI) since 1999. The goals of these studies are to:

• Generate baseline period prevalence rates of self-reported acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI) in communities across Canada
• Assess the burden associated with AGIs
• Describe and quantify the under-reporting of AGI in Canada national enteric disease reporting systems.
• Develop studies to further our understanding of risk factors and chronic sequelae associated with acute gastrointestinal illness in Canada.
  

The ultimate aim of these studies is to decrease the magnitude and burden of AGI in Canada through the development of specific and measurable interventions.
