Diabetes Policy Review - Report of the Expert Panel

In October 2007, a five-member Diabetes Policy Review Expert Panel, chaired by the Honourable Brian Peckford and including representatives from the Canadian Diabetes Association, Diabète Québec, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and provincial/territorial governments, was tasked with reviewing the progress of the Canadian Diabetes Strategy.

The Canadian Diabetes Strategy, created in 1999 and renewed in 2005, focuses on prevention of type 2 diabetes among high-risk populations; early detection of type 2 diabetes; and management of types 1 and 2 diabetes and related complications.

The Expert Panel has provided useful recommendations on the Strategy and we thank it for its dedication, hard work and expertise in preparing this report. Their recommendations will help inform government policies, programs and initiatives as we move forward on this important issue.

Through the Canadian Diabetes Strategy, we are continuing to strengthen our ability to track diabetes in Canada, to ensure that Canadians have access to the best available information on diabetes and its complications, and to work with our partners to develop new models for early detection of diabetes and pre-diabetes.
