The Library and Archives Canada Management Board

Periodically, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) looks to highlight its various accomplishments and areas of activity: its new acquisitions, its physical and virtual exhibitions, its partners and publications, its services and public programs. These achievements are the result of rigorous planning to meet specific priorities and strategic orientations, determined at the highest level by the LAC Management Board and the head of the institution, the Librarian and Archivist of Canada. What is the role of Management Board and who are its members?

The LAC Management Board is responsible for the allocation and administration of the LAC budget; it makes strategic and institutional decisions concerning the management of human resources, information technology, policy and communications. Of course, the Board does not operate in a vacuum: it takes into account of the recommendations of a number of committees and sub-committees--some permanent, some temporary--whose members include employees representing every sector and every competency.

The LAC Management Board is chaired by Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, and consists of eight other members (you can access their biographies by clicking on their names):

Ingrid Parent, Assistant Deputy Minister, Documentary Heritage Collection Sector
Doug Rimmer, Assistant Deputy Minister, Programs and Services Sector
Sean Berrigan, Director General, Strategic Office
Peter Bruce, Director General, Information Technology Branch
Daniel J. Caron, Director General, Corporate Management and Government Records Sector
Peter Levick, Director General, Communications Office
Sylvain Bélanger, Executive Assistant to the Librarian and Archivist of Canada
Christine Mayer, Director, Strategic Planning and Corporate Secretariat

Management Board members bring a wealth of professional experience and expertise to the group--a few have long histories with LAC and many are more recent arrivals from various government departments. All possess an in-depth knowledge of the Federal Public Service and government administration. Several have also worked at the provincial government level, while others have been active in the private sector or as academics. Our Board is a multidisciplinary group, committed to the challenge of developing a new knowledge institution for Canada.
