Conservatives will deliver on Fairview Terminal funding and stop Ridley Terminal sale

PRINCE RUPERT – Conservative leader Stephen Harper today announced further details of the Conservative Party’s British Columbia platform, “Standing Up for British Columbia.” The announcement focused on the commitments of a Conservative government to the Pacific Gateway Initiative.

“A new government under my leadership will do what the present government has only talked about,” said Mr. Harper. “We will make sure that all the money promised actually gets delivered.”

Mr. Harper pledged that his government would:

  • Deliver at least the five-year federal funding commitment of $591 million for the Pacific Gateway Initiative, and expand commitments in the future including those for the Port of Prince Rupert.
  • Maintain and deliver on commitments made for Phase I of the containerization of the Fairview Terminal, and make Phase II of the Fairview Container Port and the related rail and road links priorities for future infrastructure funding.
  • Create an investment, regulatory, and security environment for western ports to handle dramatically higher Pacific trade, including the receipt of direct federal funding and the removal of borrowing limits.
  • Freeze the sale of the Ridley Coal Terminal in Prince Rupert until a review is completed.

“British Columbians have a choice between returning a failed government that has ignored their concerns or electing a new government dedicated to seeing that British Columbia achieves its full economic potential as the Pacific Gateway to the benefit of all Canadians,” concluded Mr. Harper.
