Tories - Re: "Tories offer a break for transit user," Dec. 30.
I would like to set the record straight on the Conservative transit pass tax credit. David Jeanes, president of Transport 2000, incorrectly suggested the tax credit applies only to monthly pass holders.
Under a Conservative government, any purchase of transit passes or tickets will be deductible when receipts are provided. A backgrounder accompanying the release stated: "The tax credit will apply to all transit passes, whether annual, monthly or weekly, and also to other fare payment options (e.g., multi-ride passes, bulk ticket purchases, etc). The only requirement is that the taxpayer must provide receipts for the purchase."
Jeanes also stated the Conservative policy must be accompanied by investments in public transit. Stephen Harper acknowledged the need for additional investments, and confirmed an announcement addressing this issue would be forthcoming.
The Conservative party is committed to cleaning up the environment through increased transit ridership and reduced traffic congestion, smog and greenhouse gases.
