$260 million strategy will improve cancer screening, prevention and coordination
Today in St. Catharines, Stephen Harper announced that a new Conservative government will fully implement the five-year Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control at a cost of about $50 million per year.
The Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control, developed by over 700 cancer survivors and experts, is a virtual network of all major cancer organizations and stakeholders in Canada, including the Canadian Cancer Society.
This strategy will not create another level of bureaucracy or interfere with provincial jurisdictions. Instead, the strategy will facilitate information sharing of cancer knowledge and best practices for treatment.
“Cancer is the leading cause of early death for Canadians, but unfortunately we have no effective disease strategy at the national level,” said Mr. Harper. “The Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control is an effective model. All that has been lacking is the political will to implement it.”
A new Conservative government will:
-
Fully implement the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control;
- Develop new national disease strategies for other major diseases, including mental illness and heart disease; and
- Ensure faster wait times for treatment, including cancer therapies.
Canadians need a government to provide consistent leadership in fighting cancer and other major diseases – a government that delivers real change and meaningful action.
It’s time to stand up for cancer patients and their families. It’s time to stand up for change, with a new Conservative government.
