Nova Scotia Pony Express, Novascotian article 26 Feb 1849
The Novascotian
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Monday, February 26th, 1849
The St. John N. B. Observer learns
that it is intended to run an Express from
Halifax to St. John, by the way of Annapolis,
on the arrival of every English Mail, to be
telegraphed to New York, on account of the
Associated Press of that city.
Note: "on account of the Associated Press"
means that the very large telegraph bill
was paid by the Associated Press.
In the early days of the electric telegraph in
North America, newspapers were often the largest
income source the telegraph companies had.
Many telegraph companies could not have survived
without the frequent telegrams sent by newspapers.

Microfilm copies of The Novascotian and many other nineteenth-century Nova Scotia newspapers are available at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, University Avenue, Halifax.
