Mining in the Mississagi River Valley
Introduction to Mining

Cheney Copper Mine

Gould Copper Mine

Don Dolan Mine

The Hy Tower Mine

A fairly wide vein of quartz containing a rather high percentage of copper was discovered near the Little White River, just southwest of Bells Falls on a 300 foot cliff. The mine tunnel only went in for about 50 feet at the foot of the cliff, but there was an open pit in the vein, at the top where most of the mining was done.

The primary mineral which was mined was copper, but quartz was also extracted and shipped to Kidd Creek in Timmins for fluxing. The copper was shipped to Gould Copper and was concentrated there, and then shipped to Falcon Bridge for purification.

At its peak production, it employed ten people, and later, in 1985 it employed only three people. In November of 1985 the mine shut down for the winter because it was too cold to work. The workers then went to Gould Copper for work, and the mine was never re-opened.
