What is it like growing up in a remote community?

Well for me it was great, everybody knew each other, I always felt safe. It was also fun. There wasn't much places to go, see we had to explore or minds and come up with new activities. The community wasn't really big then, so it was like one big playground for us. We always used to play hide and go seek and we would us the whole community and it was always fun. In the wintertime we didn't have an arena so we would always go skating down at the lake. Every always got involved with that, so it was always fun. We had a pool hall for a while where everyone would always go and hang out. They always used to have dances every weekend, everybody got involved with that.

What do you want to become when you are older?

I would very much like to finish school. When I was younger I always wanted to become an accountant and I still want to become an accountant, I love doing math. That's something I would really enjoy.

What's your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is for this community (York Landing) to grow and become alcohol and drug free, to have more resources in the community. I would like to have a job in my community where I can contribute something back to a community that was always there for me. I had a lot of good memories growing up and I would like for my son to have the same.

Who is your greatest role model?

My greatest role model is my late grandfather, he just passed away last month. He was a hard working man, he raised fourteen children. He was also a family man. He kept the family tight, close. He always loved being around his grandchildren. He would always make us do things like jig, and square dance.

What does it mean to you to be Native?

It means, I respect my background, my traditions and culture. I'm happy that the traditional values have been passed on to us from our grandparents. Learning how to live off the land. My Cree language is also apart of me. I don't speak it fluently I'm still learning, I only now the basics. I would like my son to learn Cree. He is still young I'm trying to teach him what I know. My son is four. They teach it in the school. They have a Cree program to teach the kids how to speak Cree.

What do you think of the new technology becoming apart of everyday life?

Well it already is, I think it's good. People can just do their work at home on their computer. With Internet access, people can chat with other people, download music, and shop online.
