Imagine you are trying out a new computer game with a friend after school at your house one day. Your friend has to use the washroom but they've never been to your house before. What do you tell them? Is it up the stairs and the first door on your left? Or maybe it's down the hall and across from bookcase. You can imagine the route in your mind and you've used your mental map to tell your friend how to get to the bathroom. We use mental maps all the time. People of all ages have mental maps; whether a toddler who remembers the way to their parent's bedroom, or maybe their local park, a teenager who knows the fastest route home from school or to the mall, or an adult who uses a specific route to work each morning to avoid rush-hour traffic. All of these people use mental maps to get to their destination, even if that destination is just down the hall, or down the street.

Hands on Activity

Draw a mental map of your neighbourhood. What can you tell about your values and your life from your mental map drawing? Trade mental map drawings with someone. What can you tell about their values, and their life from their mental map drawing?
