Etrog Holder

Etrog Holder

This sterling silver etrog container is oval shaped and is eight centimetres in height. The top of the container is adorned with fruit-like images, symbolising the fact that Sukkot is (at least in part) a Harvest festival. On both the right and left sides of the container, the first few words of a prayer are written in Hebrew characters. When the container was used during Sukkot, the silver cover would be removed and the etrog would be placed inside. The oval shape of the container is ideal for storing the etrog since the fruit is also oval. Consequently, there is less risk of the fruit being damaged. This is particularly important since, according to the Talmud, it is not permitted to used a damaged etrog for the Sukkot ceremony.
