Etrog Holder

Etrog Holder

This silver etrog container measures 15 centimeters wide, 10 centimeters in depth, and is 8 centimeters high. It is rectangular and stands on four small pedestals. Each of these pedestals consists of a foot-like object with wings protruding along the sides of the container. The body of the container is decorated with a floral motif. At the front of the container, a small hole, probably a keyhole, is apparent. Four Hebrew sentences are written along the sides of the top of the container. On the top of the container, a floral motif (identical to that which appears on the sides of the container) is seen. In addition, two silver flowers protrude from the top.

The floral nature of this container probably serves to recall that, in antiquity, Sukkot was primarily an agricultural festival. This box-like etrog container is both an earlier and more common design than the oval shaped one featured in description 1. Unlike an oval-shaped container, where the cover is removed in order to place the etrog inside, the cover on this container is attached by hinges and is merely opened. This etrog container is probably from the mid-19th century and was apparently passed down through several generations of the same family.
