Kiddush Cup

Kiddush Cup Kiddush Cup

This kiddush cup is made of silver and is 35 centimeters high. It stands on a base of six "Y" shaped supports positioned in a circular pattern. Lines following the "Y" shape are engraved on the stands. In the middle of the line designs is a vine leaf. The top half of the base of the cup has twelve sides. Continuing from the base is the stem of the cup. The stem narrows from the wide base, forms a basin, and, from the basin, narrows out again gradually. The cylindrical stem continues to be twelve sided, but on its top half evolves into a wave pattern. One side curves in, while the next protrudes out. Designs are etched on alternate sides, including images of vine leaves. The stem widens out to form a bowl, which is shaped like half of a sphere. Above this bowl, the top part of the cup, which can be loosely described as cylindrical, narrows and then widens slightly. On both of these parts of the cup the twelve sided wave pattern continues. Alternating sides of the bowl section are engraved with a flower motif. The above part is engraved with swirls and vine leaves on four unequal sections. There is a lid that fits over the cup. It is shaped in approximately the same fashion as the base and stem of the cup. The etched patterns on it include vine leaves. This cup, being so large and elaborate, is more for decorative than practical use. The images of leaves are probably grapevine leaves, which would be a reference to wine, the content of kiddush cups.
