Seder Plate

Seder Plate

Seder Plate This seder plate which measures approximately 40 centimeters in length is made up of four tiers. The entire piece is supported on a teak wood base, which is further supported by four small brass legs. The four levels are made of plate glass with each supported by corner posts. These posts depict a modern design of the Temple. These four corner posts are made of silver and if one looks closely they can observe etchings of bricks. On the top level there are six holders (combination of plates and bowls) made of silver for the symbolic foods that are on the seder plate. The Hebrew words for these foods are engraved on the holders. For example, the plate for the bitter herbs has maror written on it. All six holders contain fine detailing. The first three tiers from bottom to top are reserved for the three matzot used at the seder (Passover service). Given its design however, it is not very practical as one would not be able to easily access the matzot which are needed to perform the rituals. Consequently this plate was probably designed primarily for decorative purposes. It is believed to have been produced in early to mid-20th century.
