Chippewas of Nawash Military History This community has an outstanding military history dating from the War of 1812 to the present. Ninety-two percent (92%) of the community members enlisted in the two great wars, WWI and WWII. The able bodied veterans from WWI enlisted in the Home Guards, and in WWII were utilized for guarding German Prisoners in various locations in Canada until the victory in Europe was established. History repeated itself when the Korean War began, some of the WWII veterans enlisted for that conflict while other Aboriginal veterans remained in the service and made careers of military life. Last but not least, our first Chief, James Nawash fought with Tecumseh in the 1812 War. His name has been adopted as our band and tribal identity "Chippewas of Nawash." This band has the proud record of having 92% committment in both World Wars surpassed by no other band in Canada.
