The sawmill, like the blacksmith shop, is in actually working condition
and produces various items and necessities for the
museum. The sawmill was used to cut all the logs and pieces of wood when re-building the
Taylor barn. The shingle maker within the sawmill is used to make shingles for a wide
variety of buildings in the museum. The shingles are also still sold today, for $150 a
bundle.
The Sawmill was
originally powered by a large steam engine, but it was recently replaced by a large
diesel engine. The shingle press is powered by a pulley system attached to a tractor
outside. When running at full capacity the sawmill can process about ten to twelve
softwood trees per day. The only type of wood the sawmill can handle is softwood, hardwood
would destroy the blade. The wood produced by the sawmill would have been very important
to the community. Wood such as this would have been used in building many things that the
community would have needed! |
