Watson's Garage: Garages like the Watson's garage would not have been very profitable or useful in the 1930s as many people could not afford cars. Those who did have cars were likely to have sold them to be able to afford the necessities. During the depression, the majority of people who had vehicles would not have been able to pay for the gasoline needed to run them. Originally Watson's was a bicycle garage, but due to the increase of car owners and the new high demand for gasoline it was transformed to accommodate cars as well. The garage changed to service bicycles, cars, and many types of similar machinery. Currently held in the garage are two cars, a Model T and a Durrant, as well as one of the very first engine testers. It also houses a few different types of steam and diesel engines. It is very interesting to be able to visit a garage from the 1930s. It is easy to see that the garages we have today are simply an expansion on some of the older ones. |
