The PLA (Prior Learning Assessment) Path

atvrule.gif (180 bytes)

The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is based on the premise that adults acquire skills and knowledge through many means, both formal and informal. A PLA system evaluates this learning and equates it to CANDO's competency chart for the purpose of granting credit. Parts A and B of the CANDO program are open to the PLA process. Candidates will be assessed on a requirement-by-requirement basis

.

The PLA process is based on a written portfolio prepared by the candidate. The purpose of the portfolio is to demonstrate that the candidate possesses the required level of knowledge and skills in each of the areas in question. To accomplish this, the portfolio must compare the candidate's knowledge and skills to the competency profile established for each of the Part A and B subject areas. The portfolio must contain appropriate documentation to support the level of knowledge and skill claimed.

For someone following the PLA path, the Certification Manager will review the candidate's resume and other biographical information to determine whether the candidate is likely to have acquired the necessary competencies. If it is clear that the person's combination of age and experience is insufficient for them to have attained the required competencies, the Certification Manager will so inform the candidate, suggesting that they either (i) provide additional information, (ii) re-apply after additional work experience, or (iii) consider following the academic path. If it appears that the individual is a candidate for certification through the PLA process, the Certification Manager will initiate the portfolio preparation process. The candidate will be sent the portfolio preparation guide and sample portfolios.

Once the portfolio is completed to the satisfaction of the candidate and the Certification Manager, the portfolio will be forwarded to the Certification Committee who will provide the candidate with a written decision.
