.In 1872 a government expedition came to the frontier. There was reason to expect trouble between the Aboriginal and American people so recommendations were made to sign treaties and to maintain peace. Unfortunately, these recommendations were ignored and next spring a group of wolf hunters from the south came to Canada chasing a group of Cree who had stolen horses from them. This group camped between two trading posts in the Cyprus Hills region and proceeded to become intoxicated. Meanwhile, in the same area there was a group of Assiniboine people who were also drinking. The American group entered the camp and started firing their guns. As a result twenty Assiniboines and one white person were killed.
