1857 Fisher and McQuesten firm is renamed L.D. Sawyer and Company
1857 Great Western Railway acquires Hamilton and Toronto Railway Company line
1857 Great Western Railway accident at Desjardins Canal (March 12)
1859 R.M. Wanzer begins manufacturing sewing machines in Hamilton
1859 B. Greening and Company is formed
1859 Grand Trunk Railway begins operations (November 21)
late 1850s Gurney and Ware Scale Company is established
1860 Dundas Cotton Mill (later Dundas Cotton Manufacturing Company) established
1892 Quimby and Tuckett tobacco firm is formed
1863 Gurney and Carpenter Iron Foundry is renamed E. and C. Gurney Company

1872 Hamilton and Northwestern Railway chartered
1873 T.W. Hand Firework Company Limited begins producing fireworks
1873 Hamilton Street Railway Company incorporated (March 29)
1873 Hamilton and Lake Erie Railway merges with Hamilton and Northwestern Railway (name remains Hamilton and Northwestern Railway)
1875 Hamilton and Dundas Street Railway is incorporated
1877 F.W. Fearman Packing Company Limited is established
1879 Hamilton and Northwestern Railway merges with Northern Railway of Canada to become North and Northwestern Railway (June)
