Heat and Electricity

Introduction

Coal Furnaces and Ovens

Steam Generators

Introduction

Throughout British Columbia’s history, coal has helped to heat people’s homes. Since the introduction of electricity to the province, coal has also helped power our electric lights and appliances. Alternatives to coal furnaces and steam generators – natural gas furnaces and hydroelectric dams – appeared early in BC’s history. Despite the emergence of alternate energy sources, the advantages of coal for producing heat and electricity ensured that this fuel continued to be used. Even today, much of the electricity we use in Canada comes from coal.

Few accounts have been written of the important role that coal has played in people’s homes. Its use has been so commonplace that it is almost entirely overlooked. Without this resource, our demands for heat and electricity, past and present, would have been far more difficult to meet.
