Extensions

  • Ask students to research and report on the past and present economic activities based on the discovery and use of natural resources in their home town or region. Findings could form the basis for a class discussion focused on how human communities and their technologies change the physical environment and in turn are changed by them.
  • Ask students to work in groups or individually to create either a scrapbook of images or a collage from conventional or on-line sources on various aspects of the lives and careers of such early explorers as Captains James Cook or George Vancouver or later ones such as Alexander MacKenzie, Simon Fraser, and David Thompson. The final work should be shared with the class and displayed in the classroom.
