By the end of Stage 4 a learner is beginning to write for her own purposes. Learner understands the uses of writing and is familiar with the mechanics of writing at the level of paragraph.

At this stage a learner:

  • has confidence in her ability to express self in writing
  • develops arguments in writing, and uses supporting evidence
  • recognizes how her own attitude may affect comprehension
  • recognizes cause and effect relationships in text
  • writes on a variety of themes

Mechanics

  • takes more complex dictations
  • takes notes on information learned in class
  • can fill out a wide variety of forms varying in complexity
  • organizes own written work competently

Conventions

  • recognizes root words and adds suffixes and prefixes
  • uses spelling conventions
  • uses appropriate punctuation
  • uses appropriate form

Text Type and Styles

  • formal and informal letters
  • writing on a topic
  • third person narrative
  • persuasive and descriptive paragraphs
  • resume

Writing Strategies

  • edits and revises independently
  • uses reading to help become a better writer
  • varies sentence structure for effect

Metacognitive Strategies

  • compares, orders and classifies information in written texts
  • takes notes independently
