By the end of Stage 3 a learner is beginning to write for her own purposes. Learner understands the uses of writing and is familiar with the mechanics of writing at the level of paragraph.

At this stage a learner:

uses writing to communicate with others

  • writes more complex sentences, paragraphs, based on oral language already acquired
  • is gaining confidence in her ability to write for own purposes
  • writes for different purposes

Mechanics

  • takes notes
  • writes reminders for herself
  • completes simple forms
  • takes simple dictations

Conventions

  • writes familiar words using spelling conventions
  • is familiar with punctuation appropriate to writing she is doing
  • knows common abbreviations
  • is able to construct text in paragraph

Text Type and Styles

  • list
  • journal
  • short personal letter
  • simple form
  • message

Writing Strategies

  • edits and revises with assistance
  • uses a variety of sources to check work e.g. dictionary, instructor

Metacognitive Strategies

  • takes notes to remember information
  • plans writing by thinking about audience, what she is trying to say, what order events happened
