Salmon Ceremony

large image

Description: Mable James, a member of the Sewid family, is playing the part of the salmon body with her twin sister Emma Perrault (not shown in this photograph) in the Salmon Dance. In this photograph, Mable is also holding a wooden salmon carving which represents a salmon. The Salmon Dance is performed as part of the Salmon Ceremony held each year with the first run of the salmon. Mable and Emma are both members of the Mamaleleqala band, which is part of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation.
