Annapolis Basin is the site of the first European theatrical performance
in North America. Performed on the water on November 16, 1606, L'Escarbot's
"Theatre de
Theatre of Neptune.
|
Neptune" was in honour
of deMonts, Poutrincourt, Champlain, and Membertou.
This first performance saw the beginning of a culture that expresses
itself through drama. Today Kings Theater in Annapolis Royal is the site
of the works of many local actors, musicians, writers, and producers.
Université Saint Anne is host to the play "Evangeline" which tells the
story of the deportation of the Acadians. Wordsworth's poem "Evangeline"
is the inspiration for the play itself. It tells the tale of a fictional
character 'Evangeline' and her deportation from Nova Scotia. Unlike Evangeline,
however, many Acadians found their way back to the province.
